The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has moved to reassure visitors and the general public that Ghana remains a safe and secure destination following the circulation of a viral video in which some Black American tourists claimed they were kidnapped and extorted by individuals posing as police officers.
In the video, the visitors alleged that they were stopped, detained, and forced to make payments by persons they believed to be law enforcement officials. The incident has since sparked public concern, especially among the diaspora community and prospective tourists.
In a statement, the GTA emphasized that Ghana’s reputation as one of Africa’s most peaceful and tourist-friendly countries remains intact. It added that the alleged incident is being taken seriously and is under investigation by the appropriate security agencies.
The safety and well-being of all visitors is of utmost importance to us,the Authority noted, urging the public to remain calm as the matter is thoroughly probed.
The GTA further encouraged tourists to report any suspicious encounters to the police and assured the public of strengthened security measures to maintain confidence in Ghana’s tourism sector.
