Roads Ministry Initiates Reforms to Curb Use of Substandard Bitumen in Construction

The Ministry of Roads and Highways  Kwame  Agbodza has announced the commencement of a major reform initiative aimed at eliminating the use of poor-quality bitumen in road construction across the country. The move is part of efforts to strengthen public confidence in Ghana’s expanding road infrastructure programme.

According to the Ministry, the reform seeks to enhance quality control mechanisms, ensure stricter supervision of contractors, and enforce compliance with approved construction standards. Officials say the use of inferior bitumen has contributed to premature deterioration of roads, leading to increased maintenance costs and safety concerns.

The initiative will also involve collaboration with regulatory bodies, engineering experts, and road construction firms to establish more transparent and reliable supply chains for road-building materials.

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to delivering durable road networks that meet international standards and assured the public that ongoing and future road projects will be subjected to heightened scrutiny to guarantee value for money.
