President Mahama Calls to Scrap Office of Special Prosecutor Are Premature

President John Dramani Mahama has cautioned against moves to abolish the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), describing such calls as premature.

Speaking on Wednesday, the President noted that although the OSP has faced challenges since its establishment, dismantling the institution entirely is not the right approach at this stage. He stressed that the office remains an important pillar in Ghana’s anti-corruption framework and should be strengthened rather than scrapped.

President Mahama urged stakeholders to focus on reforms that will enhance the OSP’s independence and effectiveness, adding that meaningful progress in the fight against corruption requires strong and well-supported accountability institutions.

His comments come amid growing national debate following proposals from some Members of Parliament seeking the repeal of the Office of the Special Prosecutor Act, 2017.

The President’s stance is expected to shape ongoing discussions on the future of the OSP and the broader direction of Ghana’s governance reforms.
