President John Dramani Mahama has been honoured by the Ooni of Ife, one of Nigeria’s most revered traditional rulers, in recognition of his role in promoting unity, peace, and regional cooperation.
At a special traditional ceremony, the Ghanaian leader was conferred with the title Aare Atayeto Oodua, meaning Pillar of Unity for the Yoruba People. The honour reflects deep respect for President Mahama’s leadership and his commitment to fostering harmony among African peoples.
The conferment underscores the strong cultural and diplomatic ties between Ghana and the Yoruba people of Nigeria, as well as the broader historical bonds shared across West Africa. It also highlights the growing role of traditional institutions in strengthening people-to-people diplomacy alongside formal state relations.
According to traditional authorities, the title is reserved for individuals who demonstrate exceptional dedication to unity, peacebuilding, and the advancement of African solidarity.
The honour has been widely viewed as a symbolic boost to Ghana–Nigeria relations, reinforcing collaboration in culture, diplomacy, and regional development within the ECOWAS sub-region.
