President John Dramani Mahama has directed the establishment of a Bawku Revitalisation Fund following the submission of the Bawku Conflict Mediation Report, marking a major step toward rebuilding the conflict-affected municipality.
The directive was issued , instructing the Minister for Finance to set up the fund with an allocation of GH¢1 billion, estimated at about US$87 million, to support recovery efforts in the area.
The fund is expected to focus on infrastructure rehabilitation, economic recovery, and social restoration, targeting communities that have suffered extensive damage as a result of the prolonged conflict. Key sectors likely to benefit include roads, schools, health facilities, markets, housing, and support for local livelihoods.
According to government sources, the initiative forms part of President Mahama’s broader commitment to peacebuilding, reconciliation, and sustainable development in Bawku and its surrounding communities. The intervention is also intended to complement ongoing security and mediation efforts aimed at ensuring lasting peace in the municipality.
The Bawku conflict has, over the years, disrupted economic activity, displaced families, and strained social cohesion. Authorities believe the revitalisation fund will not only help restore physical infrastructure but also rebuild trust and economic stability in the area.
