United States immigration authorities have detained Ghana’s former Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, over issues related to his immigration status, his legal representatives have confirmed.
In a public notice issued , law firm Minkah-Premo, Osei-Bonsu, Bruce-Cathline & Partners stated that officials of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained Mr. Ofori-Atta as part of routine immigration procedures concerning his stay in the country.
According to the statement, Mr. Ofori-Atta has a pending petition for adjustment of status, a legal process under US law that allows an individual to remain in the country while their immigration status is being regularised, even if their original visa has expired. The firm noted that such processes are common and lawful under US immigration regulations.
The legal team disclosed that they are in active communication with ICE and expect the matter to be resolved swiftly. They further emphasized that the former finance minister is cooperating fully with US authorities.
The law firm urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation, stressing that Mr. Ofori-Atta has not committed any criminal offence and is abiding by all legal requirements as the issue is addressed.
