Minister Raises Concern Over SHS Students’ Undesirable Use of Distributed Tablets

About 1.3 million tablets are slated for distribution to students nationwide under the Free Senior High School (FSHS) policy, with approximately 980,000 already deployed.

The initiative, part of a contract inherited by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, aims to provide all Senior High School students with essential digital learning tools.

Addressing Parliament on Thursday, November 27, 2025, Minister Iddrisu revealed that some of the tablets have not yet been customized, allowing students to use them for unintended purposes, including accessing sexually explicit content.

“I inherited a $337 million contract under which 1.3 million tablets were to be distributed across the country to Free SHS students to ensure they have access to digital learning tools. Deployment currently stands at around 980,000. Two GETFund projects support this distribution. However, I was informed this morning that many devices are not properly customized, and students are using them for purposes such as pornography, which is unacceptable,” he stated.

The Minister stressed that the government is taking the matter seriously and is working to implement adequate restrictions to ensure the tablets are used exclusively for academic purposes.

“Government views this very seriously. There must be clear restrictions on tablet usage, and they should only be used for educational activities,” he said.

He further emphasized that the school curriculum and other educational materials will be fully loaded onto the devices to support digital learning and equip students with the skills needed to be globally competitive.

“Digital learning is a vital investment in our students’ future. By properly deploying digital technology and ensuring students use it responsibly, we are preparing them to compete on a global level,” he added.
