GTEC Warns Against Abuse of Honorary Doctorate Awards

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has issued a strong warning to tertiary institutions that indiscriminately award honorary doctorate degrees, cautioning that such practices could lead to the revocation of their accreditation.

Speaking on the matter, the Director-General of GTEC, Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, expressed concern over what he described as the growing misuse of honorary titles by some institutions

According to him, honorary degrees are meant to recognise exceptional contributions to society and should not be treated as routine awards or tools for publicity. He stressed that the excessive conferment of such honours undermines academic credibility and devalues genuine scholarly achievement.

Prof. Abdulai noted that GTEC is intensifying its monitoring and regulatory oversight to ensure that universities and other tertiary institutions adhere strictly to approved academic standards and ethical practices.

He further urged institutions to exercise restraint and uphold the integrity of Ghana’s higher education system, warning that sanctions would be applied where violations are identified.

The statement made  forms part of GTEC’s broader efforts to protect the quality, reputation, and global competitiveness of tertiary education in Ghana.
